What was the origin of the Ku Kux Klan name?

I was discussing this with an acolyte. She maintained that it is kuklus, the Greek for circle. I always thought it was to do with ing a Winchester. Most of the rednecks I have come across don't have that good a grasp of clical Greek, but just about know which end of a gun goes bang. Your thoughts. If you think that 'wife' and 'sister' are synonyms I would like to hear your views.
