What's the big deal with baptism?

It seems an awful lot like taking a personal journey and turning it into a public parade in front of an entire congregation of judgmental hypocrites who are proud that I'm leaving my shameful ways to be recruited into their ranks. But maybe I just have stage-fright. So what's the big deal? Can't I ask Jesus into my heart without parading my journey to spiritual enlightenment in front of everyone?
