Help with italian present perfect tense? And Imperfect? Or whatever you call it? haha?

hI! well I just started taking italian and I'm a little confused about the whole present perfect, imperfect tense. What would be an example of each? Would it be 'Emily tagliato la torta di zucca?' Emily cut the pumpkin pie? Which one is that? Ahh, help..
